How to Make Philomena Duck's Ceremonial Dickie

The Hazel Village animals recently welcome a new visiting friend: Philomena Duck! Philomena had heard all about the Village from her brother Gaspard, who first visited several years ago and made the return trip to accompany Philomena.

Gaspard and Philomena hail from New Ducklingsburg, where the residents have a lot of Ceremonies and Festivities. Gaspard says his favorites are Splish Splash and Friendship Day, but a lot of the festivals are boring - like The Enumeration of the Wingfeathers, or Migratory Consideration Weeks.

Formalities abound in New Ducklingsburg, and one particular custom is that of the Ceremonial Dickie. Every New Ducklingsburg duck has a Ceremonial Dickie which indicates that creature’s family, favorite color, honorifics, etc. Gaspard packed his dickie for this visit to the Village – shop it here

Philomena left her Ceremonial Dickie at home, because she had limited room in her suitcase and (depending on the ceremony) she can borrow Gaspard's. However, we received a few requests from folks who were curious what Philomena's dickie might look like. Our founder Jane was happy to oblige, and whipped up the design below. While this blog post is not a full crafting tutorial, we hope it will be helpful if you would like to try making Philomena's Ceremonial Dickie yourself!

You will need a small piece of light blue felt, and some backing fabric. (For reference, Gaspard's dickie measures approximately 4 inches tall and 3.25 inches across.) You will also need embroidery floss in red and dark teal/green, an embroidery needle, scissors, and some tiny beads – ideally pearlescent seed beads. Finally, you will need to make some binding trim or find a ribbon to sew at the top, so you can tie the dickie around Philomena's neck.

Happy crafting! ♥️
