We love getting to know the skilled artisans who make our toys. These ethical manufacturing partnerships are right at the heart of what makes Hazel Village so special!
The artisans of Peru have an incredible history of handicrafts, such as knitting with alpaca wool, and weaving baskets and hats from grasses and palm fibers. We work directly with these groups of artisans and not through a middle man, to make sure proceeds make it into the hands of those making the product. The animals have never been so well-dressed!
Our partners in Nepal, who make all our dolls and animals, have a social mission to preferentially hire survivors of trauma or discrimination. They provide job training, personal development programs, fair wages, and (delicious) breakfast and lunch every day. Each time we visit, we can tell that love and consideration permeate all they do.
We also work with another group in Nepal: a small team of people who work with local artisans making handicrafts out of their homes or at small workshops. These artisans specialize in things like wool felting, embroidery, and knitting. We are in awe of what marvelous dolly accessories they can create!
Our Cambodia production is run by our partner San, who has a long history of training, mentoring and teaching sewing. With her expertise guiding them, the quality of work that San’s team produces is truly exceptional. They make all our mini animals and lots of doll clothing too. You can meet San and read her story in this blog post!
Our partners in Colombia are a small, family owned factory that specializes in making doll clothes. Making tiny things is no easy task, so we couldn't pass up working with them. They really understand how much detail goes into making tiny garments, and their screenprinting setup has allowed us to branch into designing custom-printed fabric with our original artwork.
Our partners in India specialize in handicrafts such as textile weaving and block printing. Most recently they created two different batches of custom fabric for us in the double ikat style, a complex hand-loomed weaving technique. The stunning results became a dolly dress and shirt for our Autumnal Essentials Collection.
Of course, the closest to our hearts is our local production setup here in Brooklyn. We have two talented resident seamstresses, plus a team of industrious workshop elves who help out when there’s a lot to be done. And Jane (Hazel Village’s founder) could wax poetic about all our sewing machines, which she loves, but that is a story for another time.
