Lady Littlepaw’s Quest (a Hazel Village legend)

The world of Hazel Village is rich in lore, so it may not surprise you to learn that the animals have their own fables and legends. The tale of Lady Littlepaw and Sir Hazelnut is one such story. Like any folk tale, it often changes a little in the telling. But the animals all agree that it goes pretty much like this:

Lady Littlepaw's Quest

Once upon a time very long ago, Lady Littlepaw found herself in the mood for a quest. She had heard of a badger with a beautiful orchard with many nice fruits, the nicest of which were Fairy Plums. She decided to embark on a journey to visit the badger and ask if she could try a Fairy Plum.

Her friend Sir Hazelnut went with her, because he also likes a good quest, although he was not quite so sure about trying a new kind of fruit. He had a secret hunch that it might really be a vegetable in disguise. But putting aside this uncertainty, he set out with Lady Littlepaw to find the special orchard.

Lady Littlepaw and Sir Hazelnut journeyed for three days and three nights, though actually they stopped to camp during the nights so it was really just three days. On the fourth day, they found themselves at the edge of a sprawling orchard with trees bearing fruit of every color you can imagine. They met the badger, who at that moment was tending to a lemon tree, and politely asked about the Fairy Plums.

The badger led them to a tree in the very middle of the orchard and reached up to pluck a beautiful silvery purple plum. Lady Littlepaw took a bite and declared it not only delicious, but also a perfect fruit for pie. Sir Hazelnut was a little hesitant, but with some encouragement from Lady Littlepaw he gave it a try and found that he liked it very much.

The animals bartered and came to an agreement for a fair trade, and our heroes left the orchard with a wagonful of Fairy Plums. (Some say they offered the badger a bag full of the choicest nuts from the forest in exchange, but this has never been confirmed.) When they returned home, Lady Littlepaw planted a few Fairy Plums in her own garden so that they would grow into Fairy Plum trees. Then she and Sir Hazelnut used the rest of the fruit to make a bunch of Fairy Plum pies, and shared them far and wide.
